2023 Dodge Durango SRT 392

Despite being a bit long in the tooth in 2023, the three-row Durango SUV is still a capable and pleasant vehicle. The Durango, which shares the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, does an impressive job of combining workhorse utility with ample creature comforts.

Refreshed just a couple of model years ago, the Durango's greenhouse has aged well over the years. This latest iteration comes packed with updates that aim to enhance both its performance and everyday usability.

By turning over the Durango over to the SRT team and applying the "SRT 392" treatment, Dodge builds upon what only domestic SUVs offer, a massive naturally aspirated V8.

Let's take a closer look!

What’s unique about the SRT 392 package?

We all know about the insanity that is the 710 hp Durango SRT Hellcat. However, most people don’t want the high running costs or the heat score that comes with that model when it comes to insurance and attention.

While there are a host of compelling choices in the increasingly competitive midsized three row SUV market, only Dodge offers it served up as it does, playing on the allure of American muscle.

The “392” in the model name refers to the huge 6.4-litre 392-cubic-inch pushrod V8 engine which offers up 475 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque, and a throaty rumbling V8 soundtrack. This heart pounding engine delivering a level of power and aggression that will satisfy even the most demanding driving enthusiasts.

Seating up to seven passengers across its three rows, the Durango remains true to its reputation as a family-friendly SUV. However, what sets it apart is the infusion of Dodge muscle car attitude, which adds a unique and exciting dimension to its personality.

Moreover, the Durango proves to be an immensely capable vehicle, boasting best-in-class towing capabilities of up to 8,700 lbs, making it a top choice for those with adventurous spirits and a penchant for hauling.

For the 2023 model year, the Durango SRT 392 carries over with minimal alterations. The key update lies in the addition of four fresh exterior color options: Frostbite, Night Moves, Red Oxide, and Triple Nickel.

These new hues expand the palette, offering customers a total of nine enticing choices to further customize and personalize their Durango SRT 392, making it a standout in the crowd.

Exterior Styling

At first glance, the 2023 Dodge Durango SRT 392 makes a bold statement with its aggressive design cues. The imposing front grille, flanked by sleek LED headlights, exudes confidence and purpose. My test vehicle’s Red Oxide paint job was particularly fetching.

The Durango exterior is distinctly Dodge, maintaining its muscular body and iconic styling, blending SRT and muscle car DNA throughout the Durango lineup. The forward-leaning profile captures some design cues from the Charger Widebody with the front fascia, slim sinister-looking LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamp signatures, sculpted hood, grille, rear spoiler and gunmetal wheels.

The SRT performance front fascia is also accompanied by a functional SRT hood, including center air inlet duct flanked by heat extractors.

Moving towards the side, muscular wheel arches house striking 20-inch alloy wheels that further amplify its sporty stance. To the rear, the Durango SRT 392 boasts quad exhaust tips and a distinctive racetrack LED taillight design, providing a clear indication of its performance pedigree.

While it might not be for everyone, there's no denying that the 2023 Durango SRT 392 has a captivating presence that sets it apart from the crowd.

Interior and Technology

Step inside the 2023 Durango SRT 392, and you'll find a well-appointed interior that blends sportiness with a touch of luxury. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, accommodating up to seven passengers across its three rows.

My press vehicle was equipped with captain chairs for its middle row, meaning that you sacrifice one passenger for a centre console.

High-quality materials and supportive seats adorned with SRT embroidery emphasize the vehicle's performance-oriented nature. The Challenger-inspired driver-centric cockpit features an ergonomic layout, with all the essential controls within easy reach.

That being said, as a whole, the cabin does feel a bit long in the tooth now, compared to more recently updated competitors. While the addition of the chopped carbon fibre accents is new, I wasn’t a big fan of the plastic grain on the upper dash or lower door cards as it felt rental car cheap.

One of the standout upgrades for 2023 is the new and improved Uconnect 5 infotainment system. The 10.1-inch touchscreen offers crisp graphics and seamless functionality. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard, making smartphone connectivity a breeze. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do not seem to be available though.

Additionally, the system comes equipped with a host of features, including Alexa integration, TomTom navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot, and voice recognition, adding a layer of convenience to the driving experience.

All SRT models have unique appearance features and Easter Eggs including a unique SRT “Smoke Show” start-up animation, along with SRT Performance Pages that provide information on vehicle performance, timers, gauges, and even dyno readouts.

There are even configurable race options for more vehicle control, adjustable Launch Control rpm values, and Shift Light features.

I also loved the unique Serpentine font used throughout the Durango SRT display system and the climate control page featuring the mode person with the race helmet.

Driving Experience

The Durango SRT's 6.4-liter V-8 engine boasts an abundance of power that exceeds the needs of most three-row SUV drivers. However, if you find yourself reading this, chances are you're not looking for an ordinary ride either.

While it may be old school, the Durango SRT impressively channels its power in a smooth and linear manner, offering brutal acceleration that is both awe-inspiring and sonically pleasing under heavy throttle. Even at half-throttle, the V-8 emits a throaty and thunderous sound, adding to the excitement.

Dodge claims that the Durango SRT 392 will prove its mettle with a blistering 4.1-second sprint to 100 km/hr, though perhaps not with the entire family onboard. The 8-speed automatic transmission is quick and responsive.

The SRT 392's steering is sharp and provides excellent feedback, but the stiff suspension does not totally conceal the Durango's weight and elevated center of gravity. While great in the corners, the ride may feel less cushioned over rough roads due to the performance-focused setup, especially in the most aggressive Track mode, which can be quite punishing on anything but the smoothest surfaces.

I suppose the Durango SRT compensates with its impressive towing capacity of 8700 pounds, making it a versatile option for those who need to tow heavy loads.

In terms of practicality, the 2023 Durango SRT 392 offers ample cargo space, especially with the rear seats folded down, allowing for large items or luggage for extended trips. It's a well-rounded package that caters to both performance enthusiasts and families alike.

Final Thoughts

The Durango is a refined, and functional SUV that rates near the top of its category, that is if you can deal with its fuel gulping appetite. The 475 hemi horses are as thirsty as ever, but I suspect that most buyers will know what they’re getting into.
