2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63 4MATIC+

I credit my love of Mercedes-Benz convertibles to the very first Mercedes-Benz convertible that I had a chance to drive, a 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500.

Mercedes-Benz Canada had just put on a new product showcase, called “Driving Excellence” for a select group of customers, and I had the chance to get behind the wheel of the SL500 under the guidance of a professional driver.

Being a teenager and being given the keys to a $100,000+ brand new vehicle was probably the coolest thing that I had done that year and has lead me down the path to why I enjoy reviewing cars today.

As evidence shows with my 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63 4Matic+ test vehicle, much has changed with the Mercedes SL-Class since the R129 chassis SL500 that I drove many years ago.

What is it?

The SL series has been a stalwart in Mercedes' portfolio for decades, and this new model continues the tradition. Sharing the same platform as the new AMG GT, the SL focuses more on sports car performance despite its grand tourer roots.

The Mercedes-AMG SL63 has long been synonymous with luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology. For decades, it has been the go-to choice for those seeking the perfect blend of exhilarating driving dynamics and refined comfort in a grand tourer.

With the unveiling of the 2023 model, Mercedes-AMG has once again raised the bar, reimagining the SL63 for a new era of automotive excellence.

Building upon the legacy of its predecessors, the latest SL63 introduces a host of advancements aimed at delivering an exhilarating driving experience without compromising on comfort or sophistication. From its mildly electrified powertrain to offering 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive for the first time, every aspect of the SL63 has been resigned to thrill and delight enthusiasts around the world.

At its core, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63 4Matic+ is a 2+2 seat convertible roadster that epitomizes the marriage of performance and luxury. With a sleek and muscular exterior design, the SL63 exudes confidence and athleticism, hinting at the potent V8 powerplant that lies beneath its sculpted hood.

What’s new?

What else is different with the 2023 model? Quite a lot, actually. For starters, the SL63 has ditched its hardtop convertible design for a fabric roof, a throwback to the original SL models. This is not just an aesthetic change; it also reduces weight and allows for more trunk space.

The engine has also seen an upgrade. The new model is now powered by a hand built AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, replacing the previous 5.5-liter V8. This engine delivers a formidable 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, thanks to an electric auxiliary compressor and an integrated starter-generator.

This mildly electrified powertrain not only provides blistering acceleration but also improves fuel efficiency and responsiveness. 0-100 km/hr sprints can be had in 3.6 seconds, combined with a wonderful V8 baritone exhaust burble.

Inside, the cabin offers a blend of opulence and technology, with premium materials and advanced features creating an environment that's both inviting and immersive. More on this later.

Interior and Technology

Step inside the cabin of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63, and you're greeted by a world of luxury and sophistication. Premium materials abound, from the supple leather upholstery to carbon trim, creating an ambiance that's both opulent and inviting.

The seats, upholstered in plush Nappa leather, offer both comfort and support, ensuring long journeys are a pleasure rather than a chore.

Technology plays a pivotal role in defining the driving experience of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63, with advancements in interior features setting new standards for the segment.

The SL63 boasts an array of cutting-edge technology designed to enhance both comfort and convenience. The centrepiece of the interior is the MBUX infotainment system, for the first time mounted on a motorized angle adjustable screen. While it may seem a bit of a gimmick at first, it does work well at allowing you to reduce glare with the top down.

The motorized screen features a 11.9 inch high-resolution touchscreen interface and advanced “Hey Mercedes” voice recognition capabilities, complementing a highly customisable high resolution 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster.

From navigation and entertainment to vehicle settings and connectivity, MBUX puts everything at the driver's fingertips, displaying crisp and modern video game-like graphics, and allowing for seamless control of every aspect of the driving experience.

Customizable multi-colour ambient lighting adds a touch of elegance to the interior, while the optional Burmester surround sound system ensures that your tunes are there to enjoy when the baritone V8 exhaust is a bit too much.

In addition to its infotainment prowess, the SL63 offers a plethora of selectable AMG drive modes, probably more than necessary but all very entertaining. As with any Mercedes, a plethora of range of driver-assistance features are included, aimed at enhancing safety and peace of mind on the road.

Adaptive cruise control, semi-autonomous lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking are just a few of the advanced systems available, providing drivers with an extra layer of confidence whether navigating busy city streets or cruising along open highways.

Driving Performance

The telltale signs of an AMG have historically been quad exhaust tips and a sinister rumble at idle. I’m happy to report that these are all present on the SL63.

The driving performance of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63 is nothing short of exhilarating, thanks to its potent powertrain and advanced chassis dynamics. The V8 engine roars to life with a throaty growl, propelling the roadster forward with effortless power and precision.

With the aid of the integrated starter-generator, throttle response is instantaneous, and acceleration is relentless, pushing the SL63 to its limits with confidence-inspiring ease.

One of the most notable new features of the 2023 SL63 is its all-new rear-biased 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, which enhances traction and stability in all driving conditions. Whether navigating tight corners or launching from a standstill, the SL63 delivers power to all four wheels with precision and finesse, ensuring optimal grip and control at all times. This also means that the SL63 can now be driven all-year round in Canada, should one desire.

But it's not just straight-line speed where the SL63 excels. Thanks to its advanced chassis dynamics and adaptive suspension system, the roadster handles corners with grace and agility, carving through twists and turns with precision and poise. The SL’s suspension once again proves AMG’s expertise at combining a smooth ride and excellent handling.

All SL63s also include four wheel steering as standard for the first time, further enhancing the car’s agility. Whether cruising along the coast or tearing up the track, the SL63 offers a driving experience that's as exhilarating as it is refined.

Final Thoughts

Traditionally, grand tourers are vehicles built for long-distance driving at high speeds, offering both performance and comfort. The 2023 SL63 is no exception, except that it now prioritizes a blend of sports car excitement with the smoothness and luxury of a grand tourer. This makes it a versatile vehicle, equally adept at cruising city streets and devouring miles on the open twisty road.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63 sets a new standard for performance roadsters, blending exhilarating performance, luxurious comfort, and cutting-edge technology into a package that's truly extraordinary.

With its 4Matic+ powertrain, four wheel steering, advanced chassis dynamics, and opulent interior, the SL63 offers a driving experience that's as thrilling as it is refined.

Whether carving through mountain passes or cruising along scenic highways, the latest iteration of this iconic roadster delivers a level of performance and sophistication that's unmatched in it.

Like the 1997 SL500 that I drove as a teenager, the 2023 SL63 4matic+ has sure left a lasting impression.
