2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon

In the realm of versatile and adventurous vehicles, the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon confidently stands as a testament to Volvo's commitment to combining rugged capability with Scandinavian elegance.

This premium wagon embodies a perfect balance of style, practicality, and off-road capability.

In this comprehensive review, we'll explore the exceptional features and driving experience of the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country, a true embodiment of the wagon body style.

What's New for 2023?

The 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon carries forward the tradition of its predecessors while incorporating noteworthy updates. Under the hood, the V60 Cross Country now receives Volvo’s mild-hybrid 2.0-litre turbocharged B5 powertrain as standard equipment. In fact, this is the only powerplant available, with the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain only available on the “regular V60 wagon.

The B5 mild hybrid stores energy when braking and stores it in a small 48V battery. While it is not enough to power the vehicle on electric power alone, the system does help to reduce load on the engine, and subsequently will reduce some fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions.

The V60 Cross Country showcases a distinctive and purposeful design that sets it apart from the standard V60 wagon. Emphasizing its adventurous nature, this wagon continues to feature a raised suspension, protective body cladding, and unique front and rear bumpers.

The rugged aesthetic is further enhanced by stylish alloy wheels and Volvo’s corporate LED headlights with Thor’s hammer daytime running lights. Volvo's attention to detail is evident in the Cross Country's exterior, exuding an air of sophistication while conveying its (light) off-road capabilities.

As expected, for this model year, there’s the requisite exterior changes of new front and new bumpers, an updated grille design with the updated Volvo badge, and a new rear bumper insert.

Volvo has simplified its trim levels to Core, Plus, Ultimate, in order of equipment level. The Core trim starts at $53,500, Plus adds more equipment (Pilot Assist, Surround view camera, Adaptive cruise control, etc) for an additional $5,050. The Ultimate package, as equipped on my test vehicle, adds a whopping $12,400 over the base price, and includes ventilated front seats, Harman Kardon Premium sound, HUD, and more over top of the Plus package.

Interior Changes

Step inside the 2023 V60 Cross Country, and you'll be greeted by a refined and comfortable cabin. The interior offers a harmonious blend of luxury and practicality, in typical Volvo / Scandinavian-style. You will find high-quality materials, well fitting trim pieces, and attention to detail, all of which creates an inviting and premium, albeit minimalistic ambiance.

As with pretty much the rest of the Volvo line-up, Google’s Android Automotive infotainment system powers the large portrait-orientated touchscreen. Happily, it does support Apple Carplay, which the system didn’t when initially launched. Two USB-C ports now replace the USB-A ports in the front row.

The versatile seating config and generous cargo space make the V60 Cross Country an ideal companion for hauling family members, groceries, or weekend adventure gear alike. I particularly liked the metal fold down cargo divider, which helps to separate heavy cargo (or pets) from the passenger space.

Driving Impressions

Behind the wheel of the V60 Cross Country, drivers are treated to a relatively enjoyable driving experience. While you won’t find BMW M3 levels of engagement, the steering is precise, and the handling is capable thanks to the well-tuned chassis. There is a bit of body lean in hard corners due to the raised suspension, but I doubt that most owners will be tracking their V60 Cross Country wagons.

The wagon's B5 Mild Hybrid turbocharged powertrains deliver ample horsepower and torque, providing spirited acceleration and confident highway passing. For measurement-sake, 0-100 km/hr runs can be completed in a more than adequate 6.9 seconds. Volvo also rates highway fuel consumption at 7.2L/100 kms. I averaged a respectable 10.5/100 kms in mixed city and highway driving.

Volvo’s all-wheel-drive system ensures exceptional traction, instilling confidence in various road conditions, including light off-roading. The front-wheel-drive biased system is all but imperceptible in day-to-day driving. With the Off Road mode (for the traction control system), higher ground clearance, Hill Descent Control and load leveling rear air suspension, the V60 Cross Country provides owners with the expected levels of traction, grip and safety

Overall, the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country strikes a remarkable balance between comfort and agility, effortlessly gliding over uneven surfaces while maintaining composed handling through corners.

Volvo's unwavering commitment to safety is evident in the V60 Cross Country, with a suite of advanced driver-assistance features. From collision avoidance to blind-spot monitoring, Volvo's safety technologies work together to enhance occupant protection and peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon embodies the spirit of adventure, seamlessly blending luxurious comfort, practicality, and off-road capability. With its distinctive design, updated mild-hybrid engine, and adept handling, this wagon stands out among a sea of crossover / SUV competitors.

The wagon body style contributes to the V60 Cross Country's versatility and practicality. The spacious interior comfortably accommodates passengers and cargo, making it an ideal choice for long road trips or daily commutes. With its raised suspension, this wagon offers a higher ground clearance, allowing for improved capability on unpaved roads. While the “enhancing the sense of adventure” tagline is more of a marketing spin, as with its predecessors, the V60 Cross Country does combine the allure of a premium wagon with the versatility of an SUV.

With its combination of performance, spaciousness, and Scandinavian design, the V60 Cross Country offers an enticing option for adventurers who value both luxury and practicality.
