2023 Volvo XC40 B5 mild-hybrid

The Volvo XC40 crossover has won awards globally since it was first launched in 2017. Designed accommodate multiple means of propulsion, the XC40 is both the smallest gas-powered crossover from Volvo as well as the company’s first all-electric vehicle.

For the purposes of this review, we will be reviewing the refreshed 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 mild-hybrid.

What's New

The 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 SUV checks many boxes that buyers are looking for including a distinctive style, good performance, agility, and enough creature comforts and tech without being too chi-chi

Boasting a host of upgrades mid-way in its life cycle, both inside and out, the XC40 B5 showcases Volvo's commitment to producing refined and sustainable vehicles.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 SUV comes with a range of updates that enhance its overall appeal. Under the hood, a new 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain option has been introduced - a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a turbocharger and a small electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the “B5” form.

This hybrid powertrain not only delivers commendable performance but also provides improved fuel efficiency, aligning with Volvo's commitment to sustainability.

Exterior Changes

The XC40 B5 carries forth with its sophisticated and athletic design language, with distinctive elements that set it apart from its competitors.

Up front, the signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, combined with a revised grille, give the XC40 B5 a commanding presence on the road. Subtle updates to the front and rear bumpers lend the SUV a more muscular and refined appearance. Furthermore, the availability of new vibrant color options allows buyers to express their individuality and make a statement.

Interior Changes:

Step inside the 2023 XC40 B5, and you'll be greeted by a reasonably luxurious and tech-forward cabin. Volvo has further refined the interior with high-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces, and attention to detail. I love the small touches that Volvo still uses, including the small Swedish flag sewn into the front passenger-side seat and the knurled knobs for the air vent controls.

The use of premium leather (or pleather), or velour in the case of my test vehicle, along with exquisite contrast stitching, exudes a sense of sophistication. The updated Android Automotive-based infotainment system has been improved, still featuring the large, vertically-oriented touchscreen display that controls various vehicle functions.

Although the interface is intuitive enough with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and seamless smartphone integration, Volvo's infotainment system (with Google onboard) is almost a bit too simplistic now, with a limited set of options and settings available. For example, I spent at least 10 mins looking for a way to turn down the brightness of the virtual gauge cluster only to realise that there was no longer such an option (it’s tied in with the infotainment screen brightness).

Like with other Volvos, I am still annoyed by the single view option with the multi-camera system, allowing for either only a top-down surround view, or side views but not both at the same time. Ford’s dual view integration with its similar vertical screen layout is much better.

Driving Impressions

The driving experience of the 2023 XC40 B5 is where Volvo's engineering prowess truly shines. The hybrid powertrain offers a smooth and responsive acceleration, with the electric motor providing instant torque despite its small size.

The transition between electric and gasoline power is seamless, thanks to intelligent power management. There is plenty of power on-hand, whether at low speeds or for passing situations on the highway.

Whether cruising on the highway or navigating city streets, the XC40 B5 delivers a refined and comfortable ride, effectively isolating occupants from road imperfections. Additionally, the high level of sound insulation ensures a tranquil cabin, usually an issue in the smaller SUV class, contributing to the overall premium driving experience.

The XC40 B5's handling is agile and confident, making it a pleasure to drive on twisty roads. The suspension strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness, providing a composed and controlled ride. There is a fair amount of body roll though.

The steering offers good precision, but relatively numb feedback. Nonetheless there is a high level of confidence and engagement when behind the wheel. Overall, the XC40 B5 proves to be a versatile and capable compact SUV that is equally at home on urban roads or during weekend getaways.

Safety and Technology

Volvo's unwavering commitment to safety is evident in the XC40 B5, as it comes equipped with an array of advanced driver-assistance features. The City Safety suite includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist, ensuring the safety of both occupants and pedestrians.

Additionally, the XC40 B5 incorporates Volvo's Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that helps reduce driver fatigue on long journeys or in stop-and-go-traffic.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 SUV is a shining example of Volvo's dedication to blending style, performance, and safety seamlessly. With its refreshed exterior design, luxurious interior, and advanced hybrid powertrain, the XC40 B5 continues to be a strong choice n the compact luxury crossover / SUV segment.

Its agile driving dynamics, combined with a suite of cutting-edge technology, make it a compelling choice for discerning buyers seeking a versatile and sophisticated vehicle. Whether it's for daily commutes or weekend adventures, the XC40 B5 should be on shoppers’ short lists.
