But for now, let’s enjoy what is a grand touring four door coupe, the first of which was mild hybridized by the engineers from Affalterbach a few years ago.

Under the CLS53’s long hood lies a silky smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, generating an impressive 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. The power comes courtesy not only from the turbocharger but also a 48 volt mild hybrid system and an electric auxiliary supercharger (aka compressor). My test vehicle was equipped with a beautiful (but expensive) $3,800 AMG carbon fibre trim package, which really complimented the Bengal Red / Black Nappa leather interior.

If you’re looking for a CLS63, you’ll be disappointed. Mercedes-AMG says that the CLS53 is the hot tamale in the line-up. While it may be missing the traditional AMG V8 burble, the CLS still impresses a whole lot in its own way.

Exterior at a glance

At first glance, the 2023 CLS53 maintains its distinctive silhouette, characterized by a sleek roofline and muscular proportions. As Mercedes says “curves don’t get much sharper than this”.

However, keen eyes will notice subtle revisions to the front and rear fascias, enhancing aerodynamics and visual presence. The redesigned AMG exclusive Panamericana grille sports a more aggressive stance due to its vertical slats harkening back to a long line of Mercedes-Benz race cars.

The shark nose grill is flanked by sleek matrix-LED headlights that illuminate the road with precision, able to turn off certain segments to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.

Moreover, at the rear, a revised diffuser and quad exhaust outlets hint at the performance prowess that lies within.

Interior accommodations

Step inside the cabin, and you're greeted by a sanctuary of opulence and innovation. The 2023 Mercedes-AMG CLS53 showcases Mercedes-Benz's commitment to craftsmanship, with premium materials adorning every surface.

Supple Nappa leather upholstery, available carbon fibre trim and meticulous attention to detail create an ambiance that exudes sophistication.

The seats up front are comfortable and supportive, heated and ventilated of course. However taller rear passengers may find the heated rear seats to be a bit tight on headroom. There is, afterall, a price to pay for the four door coupe styling.

Performance aspirations

Beneath the sculpted hood lies the beating heart of the 2023 CLS53 4MATIC+ lies a relatively new powertrain that delivers exhilarating performance via a number of methods. Some new, some old.

This 3.0-liter inline-six engine, equipped with twin-scroll turbochargers and an electric auxiliary compressor, produces an impressive 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. Paired with Mercedes’ 48 volt EQ Boost mild-hybrid system and an electric supercharger, this powerplant delivers instantaneous response and seamless acceleration, propelling the CLS53 from 0 to 100 km/hr mph in 4.5 seconds.

While you’ll miss the V8 burble, the straight-six makes some pretty terrific noises of its own, though you’ll have to toggle it into Sport+ mode for the greatest effect.

But it's not just straight-line speed that defines the CLS53's performance credentials. AMG Dynamic Select drive modes allow drivers to tailor the car's behavior to their preferences, from comfort-oriented cruising to spirited corner carving.

How does it drive?

Slipping behind the wheel of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG CLS53, you’ll find that the cabin envelops you in a cocoon of comfort, with supportive seats, whisper-quiet acoustics, and a plethora of amenities at your fingertips.

The high belt line means that you truly feel that you’re sitting inside the vehicle rather than on top of the vehicle. There is a slight price to pay in the form of reduced visibility, however the CLS compensates with an excellent 360 surround view camera system.

Whether navigating city streets or tackling twisty mountain passes, the CLS53 exhibits poise and agility, with precise steering and composed handling that instills confidence in the driver.

But perhaps the most impressive aspect of the CLS53's driving experience is its versatility. In Comfort mode, the suspension glides over imperfections with grace, soaking up bumps and undulations without compromising ride quality. Switch to Sport or Sport+ mode, and the car transforms into a dynamic powerhouse, eagerly attacking corners with tenacity and precision.
