2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge

In the realm of electric vehicles, the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric SUV emerges as one of the early luxury frontrunners, exemplifying Volvo's commitment to sustainable mobility without compromising on luxury and performance.

This all-electric variant of the popular XC40 adds an interesting and distinctive option to the electric SUV segment with its captivating design, advanced technology, and emissions-free power.

What's New

The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric SUV marks Volvo's first foray into the realm of all-electric vehicles, since followed by the C40 Recharge coupe-SUV variant, and the soon-to-arrive EX90 full-sized electric SUV.

The XC40 Recharge boasts dual electric motors that deliver a combined output of 402 horsepower, instantly unleashing 486 lb-fts of torque.

For 2023, the XC40 Recharge’s physical appearance largely remains unchanged, riding on the same platform as the 2023 XC40 B5 mild-hybrid. The front fascia on the Recharge is what differentiates it from the gasoline hybrid variant. The Recharge’s grille-free face carries forth for this model year, donning Volvo’s latest corporate logo.

Exterior Changes

With the XC40 Recharge, Volvo seamlessly integrates their distinctive design language into an electrified SUV. The closed-off design of the grille emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency, while sleek LED headlights and a sculpted front bumper enhance the vehicle's modern and purposeful appearance. Like other Volvos, the Thor’s Hammer LED daytime-running-lights create an instantly recognizable light signature even from afar.

Retaining the XC40's bold and compact proportions, the Recharge model features elegant touches such as discreet Recharge badging and unique alloy wheel designs.

Interior

Stepping inside the 2023 XC40 Recharge, one is enveloped by a spacious and luxurious cabin that embodies Scandinavian elegance. The minimalist design philosophy is complemented by premium materials, creating an ambiance of serenity.

The Recharge model features bespoke accents and sustainable materials, including recycled plastics and natural fibers, adding a touch of environmental consciousness to the interior. Volvo's dominant vertical touchscreen infotainment system, powered by Android Automotive OS, is central to the futuristic look of the interior, providing seamless connectivity and access to a range of digital services.

As mentioned in my 2023 XC40 B5 review, the Android Automotive system presents a surprisingly limited amount of choices as far as settings and screens. Even the steering feel weight is toggled in a rather matter-of-factly fashion with just a slider switch.

I suppose this minimalistic infotainment system does fit into Volvo’s minimalistic cabin feel, but when standing up against the German rivals with umpteen user-selectable choices, it does seem rather barren.

Happily, the Volvo XC40 Recharge does have a frunk (aka front trunk) in the place of where the engine sits. It’s a bit of a shallow space, compared to what which is offered by one of its key rivals, the Tesla Model Y, but is a bit more usable than the shallow plastic tub under the hood of the Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, or the Kia EV6.

Driving Impressions

The XC40 Recharge's dual electric motors deliver an exhilarating surge of torque, propelling the SUV from 0 to 100 km/hr in a mere 4.8 seconds. The instant and linear power delivery characteristic of electric propulsion ensures a thrilling and responsive driving experience to both driver and passengers.

With all-wheel drive, the XC40 Recharge provides exceptional traction, instilling confidence and stability on various road surfaces.

The regenerative braking system not only improves efficiency but also enhances the driving experience. The one-pedal driving feature allows for maximum energy regeneration, enabling controlled deceleration by simply lifting off the accelerator pedal. This not only extends the vehicle's range but also adds a unique and engaging dimension to the driving sensation.

Volvo has already officially announced that for the 2024 model, there is an even more powerful Volvo- in-house developed electric rear motor, further reducing 0-100 km/hr times.

Battery Capacity and Range

Equipped with a reasonable 75 kWh battery pack, the XC40 Recharge boasts an decent range of 409 kms. This substantial range ensures worry-free daily commuting and opens up possibilities for longer journeys.

The XC40 Recharge can supposedly accept level 3 DC charging inputs of up to 200 kw, though stations that can consistently deliver such high output will be quite tough to find in Canada.

More realistic charging options are, of course, available, including standard household outlets for home charging and faster charging options at level 2 public charging stations.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge continues to represent Volvo’s stride towards a sustainable and electrified future. It demonstrates the company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions without sacrificing comfort, style, or driving pleasure.

The XC40 Recharge stands out as an enticing choice for those seeking a compact electric SUV that seamlessly blends sustainable practices with luxury and performance.
