2024 Acura MDX Type S

The 2024 Acura MDX Type S is the latest iteration of Acura’s flagship SUV, bringing an impressive blend of performance, luxury, and advanced technology.

With the Type S, Acura aims to take the already well-regarded MDX to new heights, targeting driving enthusiasts who crave more than just a comfortable ride.

Acura has hinted that it wants to move the MDX away from the entry-level luxury space where the MDX resides along with SUVs such as the Infiniti QX60, the GMC Acadia Denali, or the Cadillac XT6. That’s where the Type S comes in, with more performance, and more styling changes.

What's New with the MDX Type S?

The MDX has been a huge success story for the company so far, with over a million units sold over four generations stretching back over two decades now.

But the 2024 Acura MDX Type S isn’t just an upgraded trim level; it’s a re-imagined version of the MDX with a focus on performance and handling. The Type S badge signifies Acura’s commitment to delivering a sportier driving experience, and this is evident in several key areas.

At the heart of the MDX Type S is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces a robust 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to all four wheels via Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. This setup promises improved acceleration, better handling, and a more engaging driving experience compared to the standard MDX.

The Type S features a sport-tuned adaptive air suspension system that adjusts damping in real-time to provide optimal ride quality and handling. Additionally, it comes equipped with larger Brembo front brakes, ensuring confident stopping power and reduced brake fade during spirited driving.

The MDX Type S boasts a quad exhaust system that not only enhances performance but also provides a slightly more aggressive exhaust note, adding to the overall driving excitement (as much as can be mustered for a family crossover anyway).

Styling Changes

The overall exterior design of the 2024 Acura MDX Type S is a harmonious blend of sportiness and elegance. Acura has successfully managed to give the SUV a more aggressive stance without compromising its luxurious appeal.

The MDX Type S maintains the same overall dimensions as the standard MDX, but the design tweaks give it a more planted and dynamic appearance. The long hood, short overhangs, and sweeping roofline contribute to its athletic profile.

Acura has made several styling changes to the MDX Type S to differentiate it from the standard model and to emphasize its sporty nature. In the optional Performance Red Pearl paint, it is particularly fetching.

The front end of the MDX Type S features a more aggressive design, with a larger and more prominent diamond pentagon grille, flanked by the corporate-Acura LED headlights with chicane daytime running lights. The lower bumper has been redesigned with larger air intakes to improve cooling and aerodynamics.

The Type S rides on 21-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in high-performance tires. These wheels not only enhance the vehicle’s appearance but also contribute to improved handling and grip.

So as to ensure that owners who upgrade to the Type S don’t get their rides mixed up with the lesser models, Type S badging is prominently displayed on the front grille, rear tailgate, and front fenders. Additionally, there are unique gloss black accents and a rear diffuser that further set the Type S apart from its less sporty sibling. You know what? It’s subtle enough but it works.

The LED headlights with chicane daytime running lights not only provide excellent visibility but also add a distinctive visual signature. The LED taillights mirror this design language, ensuring the MDX Type S is recognizable from any angle, day or night, with its unique light signature.

Interior and Technology

Step inside the 2024 Acura MDX Type S, and you’re greeted with a cabin that exudes luxury and sophistication. Acura has gone to some lengths to at least differentiate the interior so that it matches the performance-oriented nature of the Type S while maintaining the comfort and refinement expected of a luxury SUV.

The interior is adorned with high-quality materials, including Milano leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and brushed aluminum accents. The attention to detail is evident, with every surface feeling premium to the touch.

I particularly like that the heated and ventilated front seats also feature enhanced bolstering to keep occupants securely in place during spirited driving. There’s even a massage function with a Japanese style Shiatzu-massage feature. While it won’t replace spa treatments, is something a bit different that you won’t find in the American or European competitors.

The second-row seats are equally comfortable, and the third-row offers sufficient space for shorter adults, making the MDX Type S a versatile three-row SUV. If you’re looking for the ultimate space in the third row, the Lexus TX probably feels a bit more spacious. I also liked the one-touch feature that moves the second-row forward with just one push. Folding the seat is a one-handed option, making it particularly handy. There is some room behind the third row seat, though like most vehicles in this class, it’s best for a few backpacks or a couple of carry-on luggage bags stowed sideways.

If I have one criticism about the tech in the MDX, it’s with the Acura infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch central display controlled via a touchpad interface. While the system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a host of connected services, the touchpad is still more cumbersome to operate than a touchscreen system.

At least the 25-speaker ELS Studio 3D premium audio system delivers an immersive listening experience, with lots of settings to impressive all but the most discerning audiophiles.

As with their other vehicles, Acura has packed the MDX Type S with an array of advanced driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. These features not only enhance safety but also add to the overall convenience and ease of driving. I particularly like the placement of the camera-on button, at the end of the wiper stalk. This is far convenient than most cars out there that I’ve tested, regardless of cost.

The systems work as designed, however certainly don’t go quite as far as to qualify as semi-autonomous. The lane-keeping system is more of a lane-centering assist system, and will hand over control back to the driver once the road curves a bit more aggressively.

How Does It Drive?

The true test of the 2024 Acura MDX Type S lies in its driving dynamics. Acura has put significant effort into ensuring the Type S offers a driving experience that is both engaging and refined.

The turbocharged V6 engine provides ample power across the rev range, with a particularly strong mid-range punch. The peak torque of 354 lb-ft is delivered at an impressively low 1,400 rpms.

Despite the slightly awkward gear selector in the centre console, the 10-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, ensuring the engine is always in the optimal power band. Whether accelerating from a standstill or overtaking on the highway, the MDX Type S feels responsive and eager.

The steering wheel mounted paddle shifters do give drivers some control of the gear changes, though they are not anywhere close to as responsive as what is offered on a BMW or Mercedes. There is a noticeable delay and the lack of rev matching results in a bit of lurching if the engine’s revs aren’t in the right range when downshifting.

The MDX Type S’ sport-tuned adaptive air suspension strikes an impressive balance between comfort and performance. In its default setting, the suspension provides a smooth and compliant ride, soaking up road imperfections with ease. Switch to Sport or Sport+ mode, and the air suspension firms up, reducing body roll and enhancing cornering stability.

Besides the engine enhancements, the air suspension is perhaps my favourite addition to the MDX Type S versus the non-Type S model. Acura could improve the system further by offering a way to lock it into the low or high mode up to a certain speed, helping with curb or height clearance restrictions.

The SH-AWD system further improves handling by actively vectoring torque between the front and rear wheels, as well as between the left and right rear wheels, ensuring optimal grip and control. A neat little display shows where the power is going to each wheel.

The steering is precise and well-weighted, offering good feedback and a direct connection to the road. The larger Brembo brakes provide strong and consistent stopping power, inspiring confidence even during aggressive driving or when towing. The combination of these elements makes the MDX Type S a joy to drive on winding roads, where it feels agile and composed.

The quad exhaust system not only looks the part but also sounds the part. It’s mostly under hard acceleration above 3,500 rpms, that the more aggressive note makes itself known. At cruising speeds, the exhaust remains subdued, ensuring a quiet and comfortable cabin environment, as befits a family SUV.

Final Thoughts

The 2024 Acura MDX Type S represents a significant step forward for Acura’s performance-oriented lineup. It successfully combines the practicality and luxury of a three-row SUV while still offering enough performance and handling to differentiate it from something like the Lexus TX, the Infiniti QX, or even the Toyota Highlander Limited.

The enhancements made to the Type S, from the turbocharged V6 engine to the sport-tuned air suspension and distinctive styling, make it a compelling choice for those seeking a more engaging driving experience without sacrificing comfort, utility, or reliability.

While the standard MDX is already a solid contender in the luxury SUV segment, the Type S takes it to the next level, offering a package is sure to please long-time Acura lovers.

In a market crowded with luxury SUVs, the 2024 Acura MDX Type S stands out as a well-rounded and interesting option. For those who demand more from their daily family crossover without breaking the bank, the 2024 Acura MDX Type S is a compelling choice that deserves serious consideration.
